Homeless solo parents increasing

Social Development Minister Anne Tolley's claims that her Government's work with sole parents is her biggest success are in tatters after a major increase in homelessness amongst that group, says Labour's Social Development spokesperson Carmel Sepuloni.

'Anne Tolley is seriously out of touch with the reality for struggling families. She's claimed her Government's work with sole parents as her biggest success, but new figures from the University of Otago show a 36% increase in the rate of homelessness amongst sole parents since 2006.

'What's even more alarming about these figures is they show that 52% of homeless people in New Zealand are either in study or working. The Government is so focused on getting people off the benefit, that they are ignoring what happens after that.

'Not only is the Government failing to address the housing crisis, they are continuing to bury their heads in the sand by not even acknowledging the results of independent research like this report from the University of Otago.

'For a Minister who likes to claim that children are the focus of her efforts, she is presiding over a massive increase in the number of homeless children.

'The rising levels of inequality and homelessness under National are unacceptable and unlike this Government, Labour is committed to understanding and addressing these issues,” Carmel Sepuloni says.

Grain of salt

Some of these claims from the Government can be taken with a grain of salt.if it shows their claims do not stand up they reject them off hand.To much smoke and mirrors of what we are being told.

It is now 2016 not 2006. Sure there appears to be aproblem but be trueful in the figures you chose to use, why not make it over the last 100 years not just 10. 2 to 3 would be more honest and helpful sureley.

That concerns me....

...with reference to sole parents, that there seems to be an automatic assumption that "the gov'mint" will look after these people who regularly seem to make poor choices and not learn from their mistakes. Sure there are many genuine cases such as family violence and so on, but I would bet that so many aren't. I think we have seen exactly what to expect from the Labour party should they be put into "power"..free stuff for everyone except those trying really hard to achieve something in life for themselves and immediate family, whose reward will be higher taxes to pay for an ever growing number of dropkicks....

Too many

In my opinion there are too many women in this country that think its their right to continue to pop out children and the government will provide.... If I was in charge of welfare I would ask that women on benefit to have voluntary contraception. Prove that they want to better their lives before bringing more children into the world and making everyone's lives more difficult.
