The Bay’s Champion of Champions

Papamoa Rugby Club's Under-11 Blue Team have been crowned the best in the region following the Bay of Plenty Champion of Champions tournament.

The annual tournament sees the winning teams from the Western, Eastern and Central Bay of Plenty U8 to U13 competitions slug it out to be crowned the best in the region for their age group.

For a second year in a row, the Papamoa rugby club hosted a Champion of Champions tournament at Gordon Spratt Reserve, which took place on Saturday.

The Papamoa U11 Blue Team recorded two wins from two matches during the tournament, taking down Eastern Bay competition winners Paroa 32-12, and Central Bay competition winners Marist St Michaels 32-10.

The core of the team was coached by Phil O'Reilly and was also the BOP winners in U10 grade competition in 2015. And just like last year, the team were unbeaten through the whole 2016 season.

They weren't the only Papamoa team in action, with the U9 Stripes travelling to Te Teko for the U9 BOP Champion of Champions tournament. But unlike their U11 counterparts, they were beaten by both Ngongotaha (35-30) and Te Teko (40-0).

'Papamoa Rugby Club is humming with a growing number of rugby players, excellent coaches coming through and a lot of support from the local community,” says U11 Blue team manager Monique O'Reilly.

While Te Puna capped off a remarkable run, after winning the U13 tournament which took place at Puarenga Park in Rotorua.

The Te Puna team, which has remained relatively unchanged for the past few years, has not only won but has never suffered a loss in the Western Bay U10, U11, U12 and this year's U13 competitions.
