The Crossing to open to public

The first stage of Bay of Plenty's newest shopping centre is preparing to welcome residents and visitors to the Tauriko area.

Stage one of Tauranga Crossing's opens to the public in September, anchored by four of New Zealand's leading retail brands - Pak'n' Save, The Warehouse, Noel Leeming and Warehouse Stationery.

Over 20 specialty stores will also provide banking, dining, shopping, health and beauty services.

Just 6km from central Tauranga, at the intersection of SH29, SH36 and Takitimu Drive, Tauranga Crossing is designed to create an exciting hub for the growing community, says a statement from Tauranga Crossing director Mark Taylor.

It neighbours both the Tauriko Business Estate and The Lakes residential estate.

Planning for the area began over 10 years ago and recent strong population growth has enabled this ambitious regional centre project to commence.

'With a population of around 120,000, Tauranga is New Zealand's fifth largest and fastest growing area,” says Mark.

'It's also located in the heart of Bay of Plenty, which has an overall population of approximately 265,000. We started with a vision to create a new community hub to support the growth of the region, located where new homes and businesses are thriving. We also want to bring income and jobs to the community.”

The 17,000sqm first stage will host 29 well-known local brands including ANZ, Eves Realty, HelloWorld, Hollywood Bakery, Looksharp, ProfessioNail, The Crossing Pharmacy and Sharing Shed - offering high demand shopping such as general retail, grocery, hospitality, banking, real estate, pharmaceutical, health and beauty.

The Warehouse, Noel Leeming and Warehouse Stationery will be opening on September 15, while Pak'n Save and most of the retailers will be opening their doors on September 27.

The food and hospitality lane, known as 'The Millyard”, features outdoor dining areas and opens from October 1.

Construction of the next stages of Tauranga Crossing will begin in 2017.

Plans include an enclosed mall, new dining and entertainment concepts and an extended carpark.

'Tauranga Crossing will ultimately provide a complete shopping experience,” says Mark.

'Stage two will offer local, national and international brands in one designed and managed environment where locals and visitors can meet family and friends, eat, shop and have fun.”

Work has also commenced on a third development on the opposite side of Taurikura Drive. This will become a bulk retail centre to be known as The Depot.

This neighbouring site is designed to accommodate approximately 25,000sqm of larger scale lifestyle and homeware stores.

The Depot is due to open in late 2017.

The brand and architectural design of Tauranga Crossing is inspired by the legacy of the area's sawmilling past and embraces the stories of the people who lived and worked there, says Mark.

About Tauranga Crossing:

The Tauranga Crossing Centre is 100 per cent New Zealand owned. It is managed by Oyster Property Group Ltd, one of New Zealand's largest property management groups, with in excess of $1b of property under management.

Getting to the Crossing

Now all that needs to be done is to make Barkes Corner intersection less than a total bottleneck for traffic from all directions. The government should pay for a tunnel/underpass at the intersection (like Maungatapu) since there is a natural drop-off' either side on SH 29. But I guess Simon Bridges is too besotted with his underwhelming pedestrian over bridge project at Poike.

And they wonder why the CBD is dying. So many choices.

Barkes Corner wouldn't be such a bottleneck if drivers could get on and off the Expressway at a few more points - get on at 15th Ave for instance
