Eight crashes in Tauranga in 24 hours

Tauranga Police's driver distraction campaign has been put on hold following eight crashes in a 24 hour period.

From 8am Wednesday to 8am Thursday, police have been dealing with crashes which all could have been avoided if people were paying attention and obeying the road rules, says Western Bay of Plenty road policing acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Hunter.

Two riders were knocked down yesterday by vehicle drivers failing to give way, say police.

This is also supposed to be the week Tauranga Police were to run the driver distraction campaign warning drivers of the dangerous of distractions on the road.

'We haven't had a chance to do much about it anyway, we have been so busy.

Wayne says most of the crashes were at intersections, involving people not paying attention to their surrounds.

'A school bus had a crash. The driver had a sneezing or coughing fit, and by the time he opened his eyes, all the vehicles in front had stopped. The bus rear ended a couple of cars.”

There was also a car versus scooter yesterday morning on Grenada Street.

Wayne says the car failed to give way to scooter. The 64-year-old on scooter taken to Tauranga Hospital with minor injuries.

'Car versus tree on Topaz Drive, and a light truck and scooter crash on Cambridge Road. The light truck failed to give way to scooter on roundabout.”

The rider was taken to Tauranga Hospital with potentially serious injuries.

The Cambridge Road/Waihi Road roundabout accident at about 1.40pm was followed by the bus versus car collision at the Fraser Street/Chadwick Road roundabout about 4.20pm.

Wayne says there was also a car versus car on State Highway 29A Maungatapu. He says the driver braked hard on mud tyres and slid into the car in front.

'A young driver lost control on Brown Road, crashing into Audi which had almost stopped. Too fast for the conditions,” says Wayne.

'Later on, a car was going too fast going up the hill Warner Road and crashed into bank. On Turret Road, a driver was using mobile phone, left road and hit lamp post.

'And that's just from the last 24 hours. People are not obeying the rules, not giving way to the people they are supposed to.”

This crash of SH2 today happened shortly before 10am.

There was another crash on SH2 at Te Puna this morning where a car left the road and just before Snodgrass Road. No other details are available at this stage.

Drivers

A lot of these accidents are avoidable. I was travelling the Tauranga to Katikati road, last week, which, as we all know, is notorious for accidents and sadly 5 people lost their lives two days ago. I had my car set on cruise control at 100kmh. Some idiot when screaming past me, on a double yellow line, had to be doing 150kmh. I have dobbed many drivers in on *555. Does anyone know just what action is taken by the Police on these calls. Likewise I will go into their website and report bad driving. I never get any feedback.

Watched the driver of a Higgins light truck towing a tandem trailer travelling through the Cameron Rd -11th Ave intersection while texting @ 10.00 am today. Hopefully the company will have a chat with this young driver about his foolish behavior.

So if this so obvious...

Then perhaps it would be beneficial to ask the Police to put their efforts into concentration along with driver skills rather than speed...we know accidents due to the above happen at all speeds..perhaps it would be appropriate to heavily penalise drivers along with a compulsory defensive driving course when the "accident" is obviously caused by stupidity.Sad to here if two more 2 x wheel riders being knocked of and injured..guys on two wheels...MAKE SURE YOUR HEADLAMP is ON...one of the few ways we can help ourselves avoid being injured or worse, by cagers...

The real reason?

Posted on 04-08-2016 11:22 | By BullShtAlert

Could anyone be cynical and suggest the real reason the campaign has been put on hold is because of the dreadful crash statistics for the campaign period? The police have a difficult job but they could at least admit that being a little over the speed limit seldom results in accidents. Also why did they want this lower alcohol limit when the real repeat seriously drunk offenders seem to re-offend without any serious consequences? Get enough fines and community service and don't do them and you seem to be let off anyway??? Please target serial criminal and repeat offenders.

Education campaigns a waste of money

My opinion is that these police safety campaigns do very little. All those ads on TV must cost a fortune...is there any research on the 5kph tolerance reduction and crash numbers?

Surprise Surprise!!

This morning I was followed by a Red Nissan ute, the driver was on the phone from Arataki shops in Oceanbeach Road and was still on the phone when he turned left into Golf Road, a one handed turn by him! On the way back to Maranui Street, on Oceanbeach Road, one cyclist decided he didn't need to keep left and caused cars to have to cross the centre line to pass, and another turned left from Yale Street into Maranui Street without even looking to see if there was any traffic coming on his right! Is our town going mad?

Who's in the wrong?

Question: the police statements about these events seem to decide who the guilty party is. I thought that only a court could do that? There may be criminal liability involved, and there is certainly civil liability. Can anyone explain? Thanks.

Overit

I am not enjoying driving anymore-it has become scarey the way people tailgate, speed, drive erratically, bully. Why has it become like this?? Whats up NZ?? Have we stopped caring for one another??

Tauranga Drivers

hm intel1 .. idk, i am inclined to agree with Police on this one. There are so many inattentive, inconsiderate drivers in Tauranga for some ungodly reason. No headlights on when its still dark; don't use indicators; driving too fast; texting while driving; running red lights; overtaking even when there is an oncoming vehicle; drunk and driving; putting on the wrong indicator at a roundabout ... wth! The police can't be EVERYWHERE! I commend the Police on the great job they do, for very little thanks. But we need to wake up, and realise that we ALL need to drive more responsibly otherwise these horrifying statistics are only going to get worse!

Be aware

Our roads are good and stable they dont wonder around to steer you off the road.Drivers need to be more educated and more thoroughly tested before holding a license and penalties need to be more severe.Take a page out of the Aussie court if not from Indonesia.Defensive driving course should be part of the licensing requirement.Simple driving courtesy like being ready to drive off when the lights go green or when pulling into a lane of traffic to accelerate quickly to prevent the following traffic from having to brake. Most of all keeping your eyes on the black stuff and white lines when you are behind the wheel.

Totally agree with these comments. My question is why is this happening more than ever?? where have these idiot drivers come from? Let us hope authorities can work this out. I am tired of those running lights, give way sign, pulling out in front of me etc etc. I came home after two incidents the other day and was questioning my own driving! these things are so frequent I did think that I was not fit to drive, but no, thankfully it isnt me. Thanks for the posts above.

Get off the phones

Posted on 04-08-2016 16:54 | By just do it

The problem is people just have to put the phone away when they get into their cars. In a 30 minute time period at the Fraser street and 15th ave. intersection I would of counted at least 45 people on their phones when they were driving. No one person is that important to be on their phone when behind the wheel of a car

Kiwi drivers

This bad driving thing is not new. It is not caused by people on cell phones. It is way to easy in this country to get a drivers license. The problem here is the Kiwi attitude. Kiwis are inconsiderate and dont think of other drivers. They are quick to close the gap if someone puts on their indicator to change lanes and even faster to flick the bird out the window. Go to any other country overseas and see how much better the driving is. Why is this? Because there are no Kiwis. How do you change Kiwii attitudes??

Totally agree with you on this one. It's Kiwi (predominantly male) culture. Stick the chest out, strut your stuff, gawp, act tough and the I know best, I'm not going to be told what to do attitude. It's moronic. I thought only gorillas banged their chest to prove who's boss but no. They drive vehicles here.

Men?

Posted on 06-08-2016 09:49 | By overit

Hey women are just as aggressive on the roads, lead heels. I think its a generational thing. My parents generation were kind, thoughtful, respectful ladies & gents. Men did not swear in front of the ladies, they doffed their hat, held doors open. My generation(post war) have been spoilt in a now free affluent society. The pill, rock & roll, drugs, bisexuality, feminism, blah, blah have created "freedom" to do anything. Free to break road rules, me,me me and it will get worse with this generation. Selfie mindset.

Drivers....

Who regularly cause crashes should lose their license for 3 months... all too often these people crash their car today and get another one tomorrow... there is no thought of NOT crashing again (and no incentive or disincentive) not to crash... so, crash again they will. I think there should be a penalty (not just money/points) for crashing and there should be a register of how many crashes a driver has had... so, if it becomes evident someone has had 3 crashes in 3 months, they can be 'looked at' as to whether they are suitable for our roads, Whether it is retraining needed, bad attitude etc? There is too many crashes?? It is embarrassing? How can there possibly be so many crashes ALL THE TIME? Not occasionally... regularly? Something is very wrong here.... surely there must be a solution?

Idiots

Posted on 08-08-2016 13:00 | By JayJay2010

Driving seems to be too technical for alot of people. Inconsiderate drivers aren't the only problem, over courteous drivers can cause accidents too. There is a pedestrian crossing down 15th ave next to the Z station, doing 50km/h towards it and it's green, I see someone wanting to cross so I slow down a little bit. But when the idiot in front of me stops to let this person cross and the light is green for us, how am I suppose to react??? And this happens almost daily. Why is that light even there if people are going to stop anyways??? Has safe driving and focusing on the road been thrown out the window??? Should we even focus on the road anymore???

One quick easy fix

Posted on 08-08-2016 18:56 | By astex

To fix this problem quickly NZ needs to learn from other countries where the courts are not even needed to get bad drivers off the road. Introduce compulsory third party insurance and any vehicle without cover is crushed. If a driver has a bad driving record getting insurance is not possible and the driver is "off the road".

I totally agree with you. I was driving to the port about a month ago and doing 70k down Maunganui road in the centre lane heading for the flyover when the car in front of me decided to suddenly come to a complete stop and let a car in from the centre hashed area. Suddenly trying to stop 50 ton i was hard on the brakes and airhorns simultaniously. The car in front looked in his rear mirror and got the message and sped off so i did not have to lock it up.. Thankfully none of my logs went thru the cab or even moved thanks to my belly chains.... What the hells wrong with some people
