Failure to give way causes crash

Failing to give way was the cause of a two car crash at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and Cameron Road shortly after 1pm on Wednesday afternoon.

The driver of one of the vehicles was taken to hospital for observation, and it was a simple failing to give way scenario, says Western Bay of plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.

'Just not following the rules,” says Ian.

The 85 year old driver of one of the vehicles pulled out of Second Avenue into Cameron Road and collided with an oncoming vehicle. He was taken to hospital for observation.

Ian says since the right hand rule was restored in New Zealand in 2012, most intersection crashes are "gap selection issues" caused by drivers not being able to assess the speeds of vehicles, or trying to select a gap that is simply too small for them.

I have had to take evasive action, even though I had right of way, on numerous occasions in Tauranga. Every time it was an old person who was completely oblivious to what they had done. Catch a bus.

Not always the old person !!

About 3.30 this afternoon an old person drove South along Ohauiti Rd, indicating a left turn into Kaimai View Drive. As he was passing the stationary bus parked on the bus-stop before the corner, the bus indicated it was pulling out, and instantly did so without looking.Old person had to make a rapid stop to avoid collision. The bus driver still hasn't seen him !!!!

..if the reason for the incident is perhaps addressed and the elderly driver is charged and any penalty/fine waived if he/she gives up driving, then we can perhaps avoid a more serious incident next time....yes?
