James was seriously injured in a crash on State Highway 35 near Opotiki on Tuesday night, a Bay of Plenty District Health Board spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday.

After being freed from the vehicle, James was stabilised at the scene by BayTrust Rescue Helicopter's specialist on-board paramedic before being airlifted to Tauranga hospital for further care.

Another person who was an occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash also suffered minor injuries.

James was catapulted to fame playing Alamein in the 2010 film Boy, as well as starring alongside Cliff Curtis in the critically acclaimed movie The Dark Horse in 2014 and action movie The Dead Lands.

The actor is also well known for his involvement with Tauranga charity Homes of Hope.

Police's serious Crash Unit is currently investigating the crash.
