Are you enrolled to vote?

More than 135,000 Kiwis have updated their enrolment details since the start of the Electoral Commission's enrolment update campaign.

But Electoral Commission chief electoral officer Robert Peden says there's still tens of thousands of New Zealanders who will miss out on the chance to vote unless they re-enrol to vote now.

At the end of June, enrolment update packs were mailed out to 3.1 million people on the electoral roll to ensure everyone who is eligible to vote in this year's local elections are correctly enrolled.

However, about 20,000 packs have bounced back to the commission as ‘Gone No Address'.

'If you are one of the 20,000 or so voters whose pack has come back to us because you've moved house and not updated your enrolment details, you have been removed from the electoral roll, and won't be able to vote unless you re-enrol,” explains Robert.

'Local elections are held by postal vote, so it's really important that we get people enrolled at the correct address and ready to have their say.”

But Robert says it's easy for people to get back on the roll.

'Get an enrolment form from elections.org.nz, freetext your name and address to 3676, call 0800 36 76 56, or go in to any PostShop,” he says.

People must enrol or update their details by August 12 to receive their voting papers in the mail.

Those enrolling after August 12 will need to cast a special vote, and will need to contact their local council for voting papers.
