Tauranga to host housing conference

Solutions to the housing problems in New Zealand will be a key item at this year's National Māori Housing Conference being held in Tauranga.

Tauranga Moana National Māori Housing Organising Committee chairman Puhirake Ihaka says he's pleased the conference is being hosted in Tauranga Moana from September 29 to October 1.

'As whānau, hapū and iwi here in Tauranga Moana we're excited to be able to host this bi-annual Maori housing conference,” says Puhirake.

'This year's Māori Housing Conference theme is ‘Ma whero ma pango ka oti ai te mahi' - Collaboration and Strategic Relationships.”

Puhirake says the three day event will provide a platform to showcase leadership and local, regional and international housing solutions.

The programme will feature regional, national and international case studies from New Zealand, Hawaii, Canada and Australia. There will also be an opportunity to visit some papakainga housing developments in Tauranga.

The conference will also produce a high level national document to identify strategic solutions for the current and future housing needs of Māori in the country.

"Te Puni Kokiri is one of the major sponsors for the conference and we are also looking for other organisations who would like to sponsor the event.

'We are very grateful to Te Puni Kokiri for their assistance and to our voluntary organising committee for organising the event.”

The National Māori Housing Conference will be held at ASB Baypark in Mount Maunganui from September 29 to October 1.

Registrations and the draft conference itinerary are available online at www.maorihousingconference.nz.

Why do Maori need a separate "housing strategy" ? Are they no longer a part of and included in national housing policies and strategies ? This puzzles me. We/they seem to be doubling up on the already existing housing policies/strategies.
