A moderate-intensity earthquake struck near Opotiki overnight, reports GeoNet.
The 3.3 magnitude quake was located 10km southeast of Opotiki at a depth of six km and struck at 11.29pm.

GeoNet also reports a 4.5 magnitude quake also struck around the same time 180km north of Te Araroa on the East Cape at a depth of 317km. Due to it's location and depth, GeoNet says it's intensity was ‘unnoticeable'.
Further south, a 2.8 magnitude quake also struck 15km south of Pongarahu at a depth of 16km at 6.28am today.
