Waterfront designs completed

Completed designs for the city council's 3.25m Access to Water project are to be presented to the city council Monitoring Committee today for approval.

The budget for the project was reported and endorsed by councillors in December 2015. The Streetscape, Waterfront and Open Space fund has been adjusted in the 2015-2025 Long Term Plan to reflect this spending in the 2016/17 financial year.

.

LandLAB is the design lead and Beca is providing engineering services. Their cost estimate for the construction of the tidal stairs, pier and pontoon was provided in June was 3.25m based on the design then being 90 per cent complete. The sum includes a contingency of $360,000.

A Registration of Interest was developed by staff and LandLAB with input from the Public Art Advisory Group and independent advisors from the artistic community, calling for proposals for public art to be integrated into the project.

The evaluation and appointment of an artist will be worked through following the close of registrations. The successful proposal will be brought to Council in due course for formal approval in accordance with the Public Art Policy.

The report in today's committee agenda says overall design intent and vision of the project, as provided by the lead designer LandLAB, is to reinforce this area as the active water's edge destination at the intersection of the north-south waterfront promenade and the east-west Wharf St and Masonic Park 'civic axis'.

The combination of pier, wharf and stairs stitch together land and water to create a defined and enclosed 'blue room' which reinforces Tauranga's spiritual and physical connection to the harbour.

The design has been modified following discussions with the Licence Parties who include; Tangata Whenua, Tauranga City Centre businesses/retailers, Event organisers, Water space users (including vessels working from Fisherman's Wharf, Mooring owners and water sport organisations), The University of Waikato Marine Research Centre.

The design will have no impact on the existing Hammerhead mosaic and water fountain, but does necessitate some change to the grassed area to the south of the Hairy Maclary statues.

Tidal Flow

Posted on 18-07-2016 12:07 | By cptn scully

Love the layout and love the idea for down town Hoever has anyone given any thought to the rate of tidal flow in front of the strand? It is not a safe area to swim or play in unless the tide is in full or out low as these are the only times when there is no current. Be a shame to have it all looking good and only able to be used safely for such a short amount of time!

Estimates

How far out will the estimates for this project prove to be just going on the figures released today for the Greerton pool upgrade by BVL ? However I do agree with "cptn scully's" comments.

Correct.I pointed that out to the powers that be at one of their meetings in Red Square and they just brushed it off.I said if a young kid falls in on an out going tide they will be past the Harbour Bridge before anyone can do anything. The reaction I got was like I was talking through my you know what. But of course TCC all know better than anybody.

Comments on tidal flow correct.

People with swimming pools are required to fence them, so open swimming pool like this one, not shallow does not need one, or are the council going to employ a team of lifeguards 24/7 to patrol area. Will need at least 4 to cover the area, especially at night when over zealous patrons decide to have a dip. The answer for this is plan great but practical safety been thrown out the window.

Great place..

Looks all nice and pretty but as usual the blowouts will come soon enough, watch this space for the approval of mega more monies to wander through and get it done. No hope of any of the contingency being left and returned to ratepayers and so we get a refund, yeah right TUI ADVERT

As for the lack of safety

what does the beach have none and they are bigger busier than the water front drowning just a risk we take when the kids are in tow..............

DO I DETECT -

that part of the design is for concrete steps that will get covered by the incoming tide? Has the question slime etc on the steps been considered? I foresee a good number of people winding up in the water after slipping and bashing themselves on the concrete steps - thus probably stunned and then dorwning.

O.S.H...

and all things equal for the private and public sectors, so how can the Council get consent to build without meeting the criteria, private pools are required to be fenced and have non slip materials around them, many a lawyer must be salivating at the chance to sue Council for personnel injury, if the stupid palms on the Strand and the coloured cobblestones in the CBD pavements are not dangerous enough, we now are looking at a low tide scenario of exposed slippery steps, not my preferred concept or design!

Overit

Where is this money tree the Council thinks it has. Huge grandiose ideas for the downtown area. If you want people to come into town have apartments for them to live in, like at the Mount.

More Delays

What is it with TCC and their staff.Just as this project is to get the goahead at yesterday,s meeting they start debating about the loss of grass and the extended portion on the pier. They simply defy belief so it could impact on getting it completed for summer but as usual it will never happen on time and ofcourse budget look at Greerton Pool alterations, plus as I mentioned the safety of the public re the tide looks as if this will have to go out for more public consultation if so please put in your 4 cents worth.

Danger

I can see some nasty things happening to paddle boarders, swimmers etc with the out going tide and a good wind.
