Flight to resume after mayday call

A two seater aircraft that made a forced landing in a paddock near Waihi on Tuesday may resume its flight today – from the same paddock.

The Tecnam aircraft was in the early stages of a flight from Tauranga to Whangarei when the pilot made a mayday call, says Tauranga airport manager Ray Dumble.

'His engine was starting to run rough. He called a mayday call. He asked about Waihi Beach but there were some surface conditions there he wasn't sure about.

'He was going to come back to Tauranga, but decided a paddock was a better option. He did the old copybook job, so I hear, made a perfect landing.”

The aircraft landed in a paddock somewhere near Athenree. No one was hurt and the aircraft suffered no damage.

Technam agent Colin Alexander at Solo Wings understands the aircraft may be flown out today.

The pilot's mayday call resulted in the New Zealand rescue co-ordination centre altering emergency services at Tauranga airport at 10.43am.

They were stood down when the aircraft landed.
