Tourism spend increases in Bay

Tourists are spending more in the Bay of Plenty says a report from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

The latest Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates shows tourism spend for Bay of Plenty is estimated to be $1,584 million for the year to May 2016, up 6 per cent compared with the year to May 2015.

Minsitry of Business, Innovation and Employment manager of sector trends Peter Ellis says of this tourism spend in the year to May 2016, international visitors spent $493 million (up 5 per cent compared with the year to May 2015), and domestic tourists spent $1,092 million (up 6 per cent).

Peter says the Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates is developed in consultation with tourism industry representatives to create a better measurement of the value of tourism in the regions.

'Tourism spend information for the regions helps inform investment and planning in the tourism industry by providing further insight into where both domestic and international tourists are spending their money,” says Peter.

The Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates measure the expenditure of international and domestic visitors in regions in New Zealand.

Data users will be able to filter the information to get the data they need, including breaking down into key areas within regions, country of origin, tourism product grouping such as accommodation, passenger transport and retail sales, and by year. The data is based on administrative transaction data.

Fantastic news that tourists are spending more money, which must mean more gst for the government, so the question we can now ask is, with this extra spending why does the government fully fund our lifeguard services so the sight of lifeguards essentially begging by the side of the road can be stopped. Mr Bridges I await you comment.

Politician free travel and their salary rises and their superannuation are far more important than lifeguards. DUH!

Hate to disappoint you Surfsup but the Rotorua is included in the BOP area so it does not mean there is even a dollar available in Papamoa or Tauranga or katikati for another surf life saving mansion on the beach front.

What a sad and cynical person you must be. even ignorant if you don't appreciate that without the lifesavers on the beaches over the summer months our tourist industry would take a major hit, " come to new Zealand and drown" are headlines that spring to mind. I have yet to see a mansion on the beach, what I do see are lifesavers fundraising to provide a service that should be fully funded by the government.
