Possible rain on the way for Bay

Bay of Plenty's weather is starting to sound like a trailer to the movies JAWS – 'just when you think it was safe to go back in the water”.

After a week or so of crisp days, clear skies and chilly nights MetService forecaster Heath Gullery says parts of the North Island are in for another dousing of rain.

The MetService say another low is coming our way from the Tasman which is expected to hit the Bay of Plenty.

"Heavy rain, probably coming up through areas like Northland, Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty during Thursday, then the focus will be on southeasterly rain with heavy falls forecast for parts of Gisborne and Hawke's Bay from Friday through into Sunday."

The MetService says parts of the Bay of Plenty should also prepare for gale-force winds, with Wellington also being hit with strong winds expected across the Cook Strait.

"The low pressure system splits in two on Friday, funneling rain into the Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa and the East Coast," says forecasting site WeatherWatch.

The South Island will escape most of the big damp. Parts of Canterbury may get some rain, as may Nelson, Buller and parts of Westland, but it'll be nothing to write home about.

"Unfortunately the east of the South Island misses out on much needed steady rain," says WeatherWatch.

This morning saw fog envelop much of the north and central regions of the North Island, with parts of the King Country and Waikato possibly being shrouded until the afternoon.

Auckland Airport says some domestic flights will be delayed, but international flights are unaffected - check with your airline.
