Four vehicle crash in the Mount

UPDATED: One person has been transported to Tauranga Hospital following a four vehicle crash involving a truck and three cars in Mount Maunganui today.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the truck crashed into the back of the first car, which has then caused a flow on effect involving two other cars, at the intersection of Totara Street and Waimarie Street shortly before 11.45am.

'It's a truck versus three vehicles, one of the occupants has suffered status three injuries and has been transported to hospital via ambulance,” says Ian.

'All other occupants appear to be uninjured and traffic appears to be flowing with no reports of the road being blocked.”

However, Ian is asking motorists travelling down Hewletts Road to take extreme caution this afternoon.

'The traffic lights at the intersection of Hewletts Road and Totara Street are flashing on orange at the moment, so extreme caution is needed. The road controlling authority are currently in attendance to fix the issue."

Earlier:

Four vehicles have crashed on Totara Street.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says it looks like three cars and a truck are involved in the crash.

Everyone starts on the truckie and wanting to lynch him... lets wait and see if the motorist zipped into his braking area making it impossible to stop as is quite often the case. Lets hope the truck has a dash camera. Car drivers need to understand that a 30 tonne truck can not stop in the same distance as an 1100kg car... and that a full bonnet truck is easy to loose sight of a small car cutting in front. I am eager to hear the rest of the facts

You're eager to hear the facts, and warn everyone not to leap to conclusions....but then you do just that with your ridiculous theory. Truckies need to understand that whilst they feel nice and safe up in the big cab, car drivers are much more likely to die in a car vs truck. Keep your distance.

Its not a rediculous theory its fact. Would you like to see my dash cam footage full of car drivers doing just that on a daily basis? Car driver should do as you say and keep their distance away from heavy vehicles.

I reckon stop looking for who to blame and see how we can work together to ensure all Kiwis drive safely and with respect

You obviously haven't driven a truck... it is impossible to keep a distance behind a car in front if 7 cars pull in front... have a look at how motorists cut in front of trucks from all sides and sit in the trucks blind spots... If a truck takes 60 m to stop from 60kph (as an example only) and a car takes 40 m to stop from 60 kph.. if the car cuts in front of the truck and jams on its brakes... where should the truck go in your opinion? I leap to conclusions simply to beat the people to blaming the truckie... as is what usually happens. Just for fun... when you are out and about, watch trucks and how the motorists cut and weave around them most of the time. It is a wonder not way more accidents

Red light runners every morning and day on the Hewletts road intersections will soon claim somebody also. It's come to the point where you need to check to see whether you are safe to go even when the light is green. One day...

Totally agree with you. Hewletts is pretty bad for this senario. You are trying to get your distance right and cars constantly cut in front at the lights so you dont have any breaking distance left. There is no need to do this because if the car drivers used a little patience they like the trucks will all get thru safely. Car drivers in my opinion are way too impatient.

KW, and not only are motorists quick to pass a truck and cut close in front... they often do this then jam on the brakes to stop at the light changing orange.... because THEY can... the trouble is, the 60 tonne of truck behind them probably wont be able to stop in the same distance... but the truck driver will be the one to be called an idiot anyway... At least with dash cams, truckies can prove it now when cars cut in front of trucks and brake hard. If all trucks had dash cams, I think motorists would behave themselves more, around trucks.

I run a dashcam in my truck for that very reason you have outlined.. Every truck sholud have one.
