Highway closed due to slip

A section State Highway 2 in the Bay of Plenty is closed this morning after heavy rain overnight caused flooding and slips in the area.

Contractors are working to clear a slip on SH2, between Paengaroa and Matata, but the NZTA says the road remains closed for the time being.

A reporter says there was also major flooding near Te Puke, and firefighters were also called to multiple reports of flooding in the Papamoa area.

The weather system that brought the heavy rain to the region is expected to move out of the Bay of Plenty this morning.

However, police are still asking people to drive carefully as the roads will still be slippery and there are still chances of slips occurring in some areas.

'If people are driving Police advice is to reduce speed and increase following distances,” say police.

'Drivers also need to be aware that heavy flooding can occur quite suddenly so please drive to the conditions.”

Pongakawa Bush Road remains closed due to damage sustained in heavy rain last week.
