Major flooding in Bay

Flooding in the Bay of Plenty has seen homes flooded and highways closed tonight.

A Papamoa resident says there is major flooding in Taylor Road in Papamoa.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips says firefighters have responded to reports of multiple buildings being flooded in the Papamoa area.

There are also reports that State Highway 2, near Matata, is closed due a slip and flooding in the area.

People are being advised to stay way from the highway and use an alternative route until further notice.

A severe weather warning remains in place for the region, with the MetService forecasting a low to move southeastwards across the North Island tonight and into the early hours of Thursday morning.

"Rain is expected to affect many parts of the island before the system moves away to
the east later Thursday," says a statement from the weather organisation.

"Heavy rain in eastern Bay of Plenty is expected to ease tonight, but a further 40mm may accumulate by midnight tonight.

"People in these areas are advised that this amount of rain can cause rivers and streams to rise rapidly, with slips and surface flooding possible making for hazardous driving conditions."

The MetService says heavy rain has eased west of Rotorua, however a further 30 to 40mm ofrain is expected further east in the three hours from 9pm to midnight
tonight on top of what has already fallen.

Peak intensities of 20 to 30mm per hour possible in localised downpours.
