One person was taken to hospital with back injuries but there were no one else was seriously hurt.

Police says one of the cars appeared to have hydroplaned and crashed into a median barrier before other cars crashed with it.

Update 6.40pm: One lane is now open after a serious crash on State Highway 2 and SH33.

A motorist who called SunLive says the crash happened on the south bound land and she was about 200m from the crash which involved two utes and two sedans.

The witness who didn't want to be named says one ute was 'mangled” and it appears it has hit the median barrier.

'It looks like the other ute has hit the first ute and the other two cars have ended up on the bank on the side of the road. They are both damaged and one looks like it's spun around because it's facing the wrong way.”

A reporter at the scene says traffic has begun to move but it was going to take some time before traffic will be able to flow properly.

SunLive understands at least two people have been seriously injured in the crash with one person sustaining possible spinal injuries.

Update 6.11pm: At least four cars have been involved in a serious crash on State Highway 2 and SH33 this afternoon.

A Fire North Communications spokesman says four cars were involved in the crash and multiple people have been injured.

He couldn't confirm how many people were injured or how serious the injuries are.

Hydro planing is dependant on two variables and their relationship - speed vs water. The more water, the less speed required to lose traction. If there is lots of surface water, only a complete moron would not slow down. Same goes for keeping your distance behind other vehicles - braking not so good on surface water. Too many idiots on the roads.
