A person has been seriously injured after the car they were driving crashed into a tree in the Bay of plenty.

Police and other emergency services were called to the scene of the serious crash on Hamurana Road, Rotorua, around 8pm.

The crash scene was a short distance up Hamurana Road from State Highway 33, says police.

'The sole occupant of the vehicle is in a serious condition.”

Hamurana Road was closed for some time while the serious crash unit examined the scene.

The only diversion available at the time was via Rotorua, which is about 35km.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
