Wind and rain, rinse and repeat

It'll be raincoat, gumboots and umbrella weather in the Bay of Plenty with rain and strong winds expected to lash the region this week.

Overnight 11.2mm of rain fell in the Kaimai Ranges, while 3.6mm fell in Tauranga, 3.4mm in Rotorua and 0.2mm in Whakatāne – though the Eastern Bay town is likely to get a drenching today.

The MetService also issued a severe weather watch this morning with the possibility of severe west to northwest gales to lash both the Bay and the Coromandel today.

Meteorologist Claire Flynn says a low pressure system currently moving east across the central North Island will bring heavy rain and strong winds before moving away to the east by this evening.

'It could get quite gusty at times. At this stage we've issued a ‘watch' and we will upgrade it to a warning if those wind gusts get up above 110km/h,” says Claire.

'We're thinking it might not quite get to that threshold but we're keeping it on watch incase those winds do get stronger.”

On Tuesday the weather is predicted to improve as the low moves away, with Claire adding that there might be some showers in the morning but they should gradually clear up as the day goes on.

Then on Wednesday, it turns to custard again.

'We have another low approaching the country so there'll be a deteriorating trend again on Wednesday, but any rain that comes in might not be until late.

'Thursday should be another rainy day before improving on Friday. It's quite changeable weather this week,” says Claire.
