High failue rate disappoints police

Police in the Auckland City District have expressed their frustration and disappointment after a weekend controlled-purchased operation targeting under-age drinking saw four of six premises fail.

All six premises visited during the operation were based in the Eastern area of the City, including Onehunga and Epsom.

Auckland City Police Prevention Manager, Inspector Gary Davey said the results are extremely frustrating given the high level of failures across Auckland City District recently.

'It is hugely disappointing that the four on-license premises failed.

These premises are ignoring their responsibilities under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act and we will be doing all we can to ensure that they are dealt with in the strongest possible way.

'It is not acceptable that these premises continue to serve alcohol to minors and, in some cases, to a person as young as 15, who had also presented identification which clearly showed their age. It is important licensees, of both on and off-licenses, take their responsibilities seriously and Auckland City District Police will continue these operations" he says.

The Auckland City Police Alcohol Harm Prevention Unit works with licenced premises to help minimise alcohol related harm.

The unit also regularly inspects premises, including karaoke bars, to ensure there is compliance with the law and they are doing everything necessary to help create safe environments for customers and neighbouring communities.

Enforcement application for suspension/cancellation on licences and duty manager certificates will be submitted to the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority for the four premises and duty managers.

Very disappointing I don,t know why the police have to keep checking these sites, the owners know the rules & regulations If they are caught selling to under-age their License should be Suspended and cease trading for a month.

I know 16 year olds that you would swear were 25.... I also know 30 year olds that still get asked for id (annoyingly).I even know a young lady who is 24 and to look at, she looks 14 at most.... very frustrating for her... without facts and circumstances (crowded dark venue)and the police using people they know look well over 18 (entrapment) business owners, new staff who aren't confident yet, crowded venues... mistakes can happen. I believe, if someone sells to a minor knowingly on purpose... they should cop the lot... but mistakes happen both ways and unfortunately, police are very good at getting the results they want. Closing a business caught in a trap is pointless, because bar staff make genuine mistakes in busy periods in dark premisis. The facts we have are not enough to hang draw and 1/4 business owners

Why don't they get
