Checking electoral enrollments

From today, New Zealanders will be asked to check whether they're enrolled and ready for the local elections in October.

'From Monday we'll be sending out enrolment update packs to all New Zealand's 3.1 million enrolled voters,” says the Electoral Commission's Robert Peden.

It's time to check your electoral roll details.

'We're asking everyone to check their packs to make sure that we have their details correct, so that they don't miss out on voting in the local elections.

'All you'll need to do is check that your details are right. If they're correct, you don't need to do anything more. If anything needs updating, make the changes and send them back to us immediately.”

The local elections are held by postal vote, so it's critical people are enrolled at the right address. Only those correctly enrolled by Friday, August 12, will get their voting papers for the 2016 local elections sent to them in the mail.

'If you don't get a pack by July 4, you're not enrolled so you need to get onto it,” says Robert. 'If you get a pack that's not addressed to anyone at your house, send it back.”

Enrolling or updating your details is easy - go online or freetext your name and address to 3676, call 0800 36 76 56 or go to any PostShop.

Local elections give you the chance to have your say on who runs your local council and district health board. They make decisions on things like the local environment, rates, parking, rubbish, parks and health services.

slightly off subject but with Britain exiting the EU, hope we can have a referendum on the Treaty of Waitangi and also possibly the UN, and exit both. Or if not exit from the ToW, at least use the real one and not the BS made up in the 1970's because it is illegal to alter the meaning of a treaty after being signed.

Isolationism seems to be popular at the moment. Donald wants a wall, UK wants out of Europe. It may work for them given the size of their economies but I'm not sure it would be good for a tiny little place at the bottom of the world. Little places that have adopted such attitudes in the last 50 years have tended to get poorer economically. The only thing the UK result confirmed to me is that the notion of democracy is flawed. A huge number of people in the UK (and elsewhere) don't work, never have, never will and can barely tie their shoelaces. Even many that do work struggle to hold a thought for more than a second, yet their opinion is counted the equal of someone who is intelligent. The human race has bred itself stupid. The end of the world is close.
