Four die in serious crash

Four people have died in a crash involving two vehicles near Hamilton Airport last night.

At least two others, possibly more, were trapped in the crash on Ohaupo Rd just after 10pm police say.

Police said in a media statement four people had died at the scene and one person was tken to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.

The dead are all thought to be aged in their late teens and 20s, police say.

St John told Stuff, one person, believed to be a man, was taken to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Paul Radden says the crash involved a Toyota van and a Nissan Skyline car.

Fire crews from Hamilton and heavy rescue trucks from Chartwell and Hamilton Airport worked simultaneously to cut trapped people from the vehicles, he says.

He says there were people trapped in the van and the car.

A section of Ohaupo Rd (SH3) was closed. Diversions were in place from the intersection of the SH3 and 21, commonly known as Airport Road, to Raynes Road.

More details would be released as they come to hand, police say.
