New Zealand Police is reminding all boating enthusiasts to ensure they are properly prepared when venturing out on the water.

At this time of year it can get cold and the weather can change in an instant.

Police, Maritime New Zealand and local authorities are having to use valuable resources to help some boaties who are not properly prepared. File.

A number of water rescues occur because people go out on the water unprepared.

Not only can this be dangerous and put other people at risk, it also takes considerable police resources to rescue the troubled boaties, taking them away from helping the public and attending and solving crimes.

Police, Maritime New Zealand and local authorities all have the ability to take enforcement action against those acting irresponsibly on the water.

Police can (and do) prosecute those who break the law and put others at risk.

Last night in Queenstown, two people had to be rescued after getting caught out on the lake on an inflatable boat with only one life jacket.

The boat had no motor and the occupants were left with only one oar after the other one broke.

The weather was not favourable and police spent considerable time locating the pair and bringing them back to land.

While police are glad they both made it back safe and sound, this incident could have ended very differently and could have been avoided had they been adequately prepared.

Police are talking to the pair about what happened.

Water safety is so important and some simple common sense checks can prevent needless tragedies.

Always wear a life jacket when you're boating, jet skiing or using other craft on the water, make sure your equipment is safe and working and check the water and weather conditions before you set out.
