A ridge of high pressure drapes over the North Island this weekend, while a front affects the South Island.

Things are looking fine in the Bay today with a high of 16 degrees predicted. An overnight low of 8 degrees is on the cards for the region.

The MetService is predicting the same for tomorrow and Sunday.

A low pressure system deepens in the Tasman Sea over the weekend, before pushing the ridge off to the east on Monday and spreading a front over the country on Tuesday, bringing rain and strong northerly winds to many areas.

Today eastern areas should be mostly sunny, while cloudy periods and a few showers affect western areas, says the MetService.

It's a similar story today as the high pressure persists.

'Fieldays at Mystery Creek will start with some morning fog and then a few cloudy periods throughout the day,” says a statement from the MetService.

'On Saturday, a front moves up the South Island, bringing periods of heavy rain to the West Coast and scattered falls further east.”

The North Island should remain mostly dry, with cloudy periods for the All Blacks v Wales game in Wellington Saturday evening. Into Sunday, the front continues to bring rain to the West Coast, and to the north of the South Island and lower North Island during the morning.
