Polar plunge raises $1660

Mount Maunganui College students raised more than $1660 this week after students ran towards the freezing water in memory of people close to the school.

Even though temperatures were in the single digits, the students donned their orange for leukaemia awareness and headed to Omanu Surf Club for the annual polar bear plunge.

Though the temperatures weren't as cold as they had been expecting, sports prefect Caitlyn Lyttle says it was cold enough.

'The morning had not been as cold as the last couple of ones we've had but our feet all went numb as we waited on the sand.

'The water was freezing and despite many efforts by students to stay in, they succumbed to the cold and hopped out after a few minutes.”

Despite the frigid water, Caitlyn says students had a good time.

'Everyone had fun dressing up and fundraising for a great cause.”

The polar bear plunge is run to remember people that have suffered from leukaemia.

'We run the polar bear plunge to recognise the people in the community who have passed away with Leukaemia. Jed Roberts and Harrison Mundy are two of the people who we commemorate for this event as one is an ex student and Harrison is the son of a former teacher.”

The money raised will go to the leukaemia foundation, and to donate online, email terryc@mmc.school.nz
