NZ kiwifruit more affordable in Korea

Korean consumers can now buy New Zealand kiwifruit at more affordable prices thanks to the free trade agreement between the two countries.

And the good news is New Zealand growers are better off too.

New Zealand Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Clare Fearnley introduces New Zealand kiwifruits at the ambassador's residence.

During 2014 before the trade agreement came into effect, Zespri growers paid approximately $22 million in tariffs, with the rate set at 45 percent.

Under the FTA, which was ratified with South Korea last year, tariffs on New Zealand kiwifruit will be reduced to zero over the next five years.

The New Zealand Embassy in Korea, together with NZ kiwifruit brand Zespri, held a promotional event this week to celebrate the price reduction.

'Known for its superb quality and taste, New Zealand kiwifruit have been enjoyed by Korean consumers for the last 25 years and we hope that through the Korea-New Zealand FTA, will continue to be loved by Korean consumers,” says New Zealand Ambassador Clare Fearnley.

'New Zealand also strives for mutual growth with the local kiwifruit orchards, having signed a partnership with Seogwipo in 2004 to grow gold kiwifruits in Jeju.

'This allows kiwifruit grown in New Zealand to be available in the summer and kiwifruit from Jeju to be available in the winter.”
