Bullseye for The Judge

A Whangamata star dart player has had a busy week competing in Australia and bagging a number of wins.

Judy Fenton and the rest of the New Zealand darts team jetted off to Dubbo in New South Wales to compete in the DPA ALH Australasian Championships.

Whangamata darts player Judy Fenton had great wins last week at the DPA ALH Australasian Championships.

‘Judge Judy', as she is known as, took part in the team, pairs and single events over the week.

She took the DPA Australian Singles title after winning against the Australian player Lavinia Hogg 3-2.

Judy also took the Ladies Open Singles title, beating another Aussie player, Tracey Avis.

In the Ladies Doubles competition, Judy and her partner Sha Hohipa outdid the Queensland duo Chrissy Sheerin and Bev James by winning 3-0.

The ladies of team New Zealand came a respectable second place behind the Queensland team.

'[The competition] was a major one, I normally play four days when I go away for nationals,” says Judy. Despite fighting a cold during the competition, it didn't seem to affect Judy's game.

'I had a brilliant week, I really did. It was amazing.”

Judy has been playing darts competitively since 2005 and is currently one of the best women's dart players in the country. Judy's now waiting to hear if she has made it to the New Zealand Charter Club team any day now.

After winning the last two North Island Championship titles and the National Dart Champion title last year, Judy's got high hopes she will make the team.

She's got two weeks until her next competition which is held in Auckland. 'I usually just practice one week before a big tournament so I'll have a week off then I'll hit the board 2-3 hours a day before I go up to Auckland.”

She's got a big year ahead of her in terms of competition as she's hoping to defend her national title in Invercargill in July and hopefully will make it to London for the Winmau World Masters in November with top New Zealand player, Tina Osborne.
