Chilly start to the first day of winter

Winter has made its presence known with temperatures dropping to around 5C early this morning.

Some places in New Zealand got down to -6C around 4am, says the MetService.

Icy temperatures gripped the country early this morning.

The good news is it's going to get slightly warmer on Wednesday, and most of the country is in for a clear day

The bad news is these chilly nights are here to stay, for at least the next five days, says meteorologist Hannah Moes.

So, dust off the hot water bottle, turn on the electric blanket and decide who gets to be little spoon for the first official week of winter.

Hannah says skies would be clearing across the west of the country on Wednesday "but obviously with a frosty start".

The east would be in for a slightly colder and more showery day.
