Offenders get look into history

Nine offenders serving sentences of Community Work in Tauranga had a unique experience recently when they had an opportunity to check out a local archaeological dig site.

The participants in a Tauranga Work and Living Skills Te Rongoa course visited Otanewainuku Forest last week for a field trip.

Offenders serving community work sentences visited an archaeological dig site.

Te Rongoa is the traditional Māori medicinal use of plants.

During the excursion, run in conjunction with a local iwi cultural advisor, the group were surprised to be invited to also view a nearby archaeological site the site where a housing development is to be built.

Archaeologists have been tasked to explore the history of the area as there was a pre-European settlement in the area. The group were shown several kumara pits and enjoyed an explanation from the head archaeologist of the soil layers and different findings. To date some taonga have been found on this site.

Probation Officer Melissa Campbell says she has received really positive feedback from those who enjoyed the experience.

'It's such an awesome opportunity and the crew came back just buzzing. It never would have come about if we weren't working with such great local partners on this programme but it ties in so well.

'Some of the guys plan to take their family back to see the developments happening and are now really interested in the local history.”

Become a scumbag crim and get to go on the social events that you missed out on at the school that you never attended. As the advert says "Priceless"! Childcare for the over seventeens...

I sorry for you "By How about this view!" that you can not find it in you have forgiveness. If we all kept knocking so called 'scumbag crim', your words we would be in bigger trouble still. Hats off to those who are trying to convert, re educate those who have fallen by the roadside to become better citizens and before others start going on, yes there are some that will never be converted but some also need to be given a chance and for this we have to rely on fellow human beings, and if they are more right than wrong that is great. Some times mistakes can be made and I challenge most people to say have you never made a mistake. If you say never you are lucky or deceiving yourself.

I can see from your remarks that you have a personal involvement with these "Scumbags". I'm not sure that my being an apologist for the wanton activities of these oxygen thieves will remove them from their criminal activities. Whilst we provide them with excuses for their behaviour there will be no desire on their part to change. I would be building MORE penal institutions in this country and extending imprisonment rather than trying to change someone that has no desire and sees no benefit to changing themselves. Prison hurts taxpayers and family members MORE than the criminals.

You obviously have a big chip on your shoulder that has been for years. At what stage do you forgive, I was taught to be thoughtful. I do find it hard to forgive those accused of major crimes but these people who were taken out to see this place were obvious of a minor scuffle, some may have been drink driving, not able to speeding fines, we do not know their crime and someone thought we may be able to turn them around. I have no involvement what so ever with what you call scumbags and perhaps they may be thinking of you in other terms. All I am saying some people need to be given a chance and according to you once bad always rotten, they are not fruit brainless they are humans, fellow people. If they were really bad they would not be going there.

Major or minor?

And drink-driving is NOT a major crime ?? I call any crime which has the potential to kill an innocent person MAJOR!

You tar them all with the same brush, ignoring the various deliberations and decisions made by the courts on relative types of punishment. What's your philosophy, "Lock 'me all up and throw away the key?" It seems for you there is no way back. I'll put my hand up for working with someone who has been imprisoned. And, as an outsider, what a bewildering and frightening place our penal system is. It's run to your taste, where when I visit, it's their place, their rules and their attitudes and I, and much less those incarcerated are treated accordingly. Recent statistics show 15% recidivism for Home Detention prisoners, versus 40% for those imprisoned. How about that for an outcome? And when the prisons fill under your scheme, what next bring back kangaroo courts and hanging? Make some positive use of the tens of thousands it costs to incarcerate someone.

Enough already

When are people going to accept the facts that these people regardless of background ethniticity made the choices they did and now want to be treated like VICTIMS !. Bullshit!. One of the only mainstream countries who are hell bent on PROTECTING the CRIMINAL . POOR CONDITIONS Tibs ?. People are living in their bloody cars and don't have a fraction of what these PARASITES get. Boo hoo your in prison it was YOUR OWN ACTIONS that got your arse there in the first place!. Compare us to Thailand China Korea America these persons are in five star accomodation.

Do a crime and get a career for free weeeee the tax payer will sponsor you we have done since we all arrived here. Career choice for generations past , present and future. Keep up the excuses after all that's what this country encourages just look at IWI intervention when faced with sentencing they provide a programme to support the offending not address it. If it quacks like a duck it's generally not a Judge , and yet a quacking duck dive consequence.

Unfortunately your view of offending gets at lot of support from the lawmakers in this country. Remember the old days when you could leave your doors unlocked and you could WALK down the street at night? YES, YES, YES, I would bring back capital punishment tomorrow.... It wouldn't stop crime happening, but it would stop the same people re-offending and getting worse wouldn't it!

give us a break!!!

First of all, I am one of the Participants on the Rongoa Course,I would like to inform the "critics" out there that i am not a "Scumbag or a Parasite" and nor is anyone else on the course. I am on a Community Work Sentence for unpaid fines so if that makes me a criminal in your small minds then so be it. It is sad that people make comments and judgements of others without knowing actual facts. Some comments made by individuals are just pathetic!!! Id rather be a criminal than a judgemental idiot who runs people down who are trying to better themselves. Im sure your lives havent been perfect....Let those without sin cast the first stone
