Bay DHB hit surgery targets

Bay of Plenty District Health Board have surpassed their target for elective surgery.

The third quarter results from the Ministry of Health for 2015/16 show Bay of Plenty have again achieved the national target for elective surgery.

File.

District Health Boards throughout the country plan to deliver 138,026 elective surgeries for the year to date and have delivered 7992 more.

Bay of Plenty's figures show they surpassed their 100 per cent target by 10 per cent (718 extra surgeries).

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says the health targets continue to drive performance across the health system, with the gains made in the previous quarter largely maintained in DHB.

'The health targets are important as they help to deliver better, faster access to key health services for New Zealanders,” says Jonathan.

'These results are a credit to the health professionals in the Bay of Plenty. The elective surgery target was again achieved nationally.

This Government is committed to delivering more elective surgery to meet demand - we've delivered around 50,000 more surgeries over the last seven years.”

Jonathan says Bay of Plenty maintained its results on shorter stays in ED, one per cent below the target at 94 per cent.

'Further progress is needed on faster cancer treatment, immunisation coverage for eight month olds, and better help for smokers to quit.”

The new childhood obesity health target will replace the more heart and diabetes checks target from July 1.

Heart and diabetes checks will remain an accountability measure for DHBs to ensure the gains made are not lost.

they don't hit target, they just don't give you appointments or consults, it keeps their figures down...

Targets...

I was declined surgery for removal of a skin basal carcinoma. My doctor said it had to come out, quickly. So, $2600 later... I thought that with all the news about skin cancer they would have bent over backwards to help. Furthermore, I was declined by the hospital physiotherapy unit for treatment, even though I had a referral from a surgeon. Again, had to get it done, so, at my own expense... As a pensioner, my bank account can't take much more of this.

Misleading

I like the way the title misleads the reader into thinking all sugery targets were met only to read thru it and find it was just elective surgery.
