Football club looks to the future

Tauranga City United may not have the greatest record this season, but the team and club haven't let it get on top of them, says club president Paul Bate.

United suffered a heart breaking 2-0 loss to Eastern Suburbs at Links Ave yesterday, in the latest round of the Northern Region Football League. It's their second loss in two weeks.

Apart from a 2-2 draw with East Coast Bays in Round 8, the side have to look way back to Round 4 for a tick in the win column.

In fact the boys in blue have only managed to get one other win, which was the 3-0 win over Onehunga Sports back in the first round.

While it's been a bitter pill to swallow, Paul says the club and players have remained up-beat about it all.

Rightfully so, considering the club gain promotion only last year.

Paul says the club expected it would take some adjusting to the premiership.

While they remain upbeat, it doesn't mean the team hasn't let their emotions get the better of them at times due to this year's competition.

'At the moment it's a bit of a learning curve and it's week in, week out obviously. It's going to take time. It's about consolidation this season and staying up [in the division].

'My main passion for the club is to get an academy youth development going in the community. That's the long term goal for the future.”

Paul says having a youth development programme would help build the player stocks of the club as well as help push players onto higher honours in the sport.

United's next match is an away game against Hamilton Wanderers this Saturday. Kick-off's at 2.45pm.
