Police have released the name of the two youngsters who died in a serious crash near Tauranga yesterday.
The first was 16-year-old Chance Whittaker-Ngaropo and 12-year-old Te Hira Whittaker-Ngaropo both from Auckland.
Police have named the two youngsters who died in a serious crash yesterday. File.
The accident happened just before 8am on Saturday when a car the boys were travelling in rolled on SH2 east of Pukehina Beach, about 3km northeast of Pongakawa.
The pair have been named as 16-year-old Chance Whittaker-Ngaropo and 12-year-old Te Hira Whittaker-Ngaropo.
It is understood that the pair were travelling toward Whakatane before the car rolled and collided with some trees on a straight part of State Highway 2 near Old Coach Rd.
A witness told SunLive one car was involved in the crash, and it appeared two boys were trapped in the vehicle at the time of the crash and were "in a bad way".
He says road conditions in the area were wet.

Am I reading this right-were they the only 2 in the car? If so I presume the older was on a L plate, which would make it illegal to be transporting the younger brother.
Ummmm, me too!

While i have sympathy for the parents of these two kids, i agree with overit! The 16 year old would be on a restricted licence [at the most] and without a fully qualified driver in the car, should not have been carrying passengers. Young drivers do not have the driving experience, to know how conditions change when driving in the wet. How very sad for the family though ..
Sympathy BUT. . . .

What is a 16 year old doing driving - with 2 passengers - let alone a SUV from Auckland!! Until the investigation is completed was fatigue a factor, or inexperience, or not driving to the conditions. Only experienced drivers should be behind the wheel of SUV's and 4X4's. Sympathy to a well respected Eastern Bay of Plenty family.
16 year old
