Police dog Yoda dies

Tauranga-based police dog Yoda has died.

The sad news was released on the Police Dog Trust Facebook page yesterday.

Although the hard working police dog has died he has left a great legacy siring 65 puppies.

In 2012 Sunlive reported Yoda could be proud after competing against four of his pups in the annual New Zealand Dog Championships in Trentham.

"Yoda's legacy will certainly continue on for many years to come. Our thoughts are with Yoda's handler Kayne and his family.

"He was an exceptional operational dog that will be sorely missed at Tauranga Dog Section," the Trust says.

Yoda has featured in many media stories from as early as 2007 when he was hailed as a "wonder dog" when he was still a puppy.

It was reported his father Diezel was a top police dog in the UK.

Ezra, a grandson of Yoda, was featured in the news late last year when as a puppy he began the path to becoming an operational police dog.

Yoda's death comes a month after police dog Gazza was shot dead in Porirua.

Sad time

It is a sad time for police when one of their members dies - and I count police dogs as members of the force. Whether one has experienced being tracked by police dogs or seen them in action doing the tracking, one cannot but have admiration for the wonderful bond forged between the dogs and their handlers. Losing a dog is tantamount to losing a family member. It is all the more tragic when one is killed in the line of duty like the recent death of Gazza in Wellington.

In line of duty

My view on this has always been that offenders who kill one of our police dogs should be given the same penalty for murder/manslaughter as would be awarded the killer of any other member of our police force.
