Update 2.06pm: A 16-year-old male is in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital after a fatal crash near Tauranga.

The teenager was the driver of the car which crashed just before 8am this morning. Two passengers where in the car at the time of the crash on State Highway 2.

It's understood trio were travelling towards Whakatane, on a straight part of the road when it rolled and collided with trees.

One person died at the scene while another passenger was taken to Tauranga Hospital but was not in a serious condition says a Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter release.

Update 10.56am: Police have reopen the road after a fatal crash this morning.

One person has died another is in a critical condition and SunLive understand a third person is in Tauranga Hospital after a single car crash about 3km northeast of Pongakawa on State Highway 2 just before 8am this morning.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.

Update 10.18am: Police have confirmed one person is dead and another is in critical condition after a crash on State Highway 2 near Tauranga.

The crash happen just before 8am this morning about 3km northeast of Pongakawa on SH2. Police say they were not releasing the name of the person who died and the Serious Crash Unit is investingating the crash.

Update 9.14am: Reports are coming in one person is believed to have died at the scene of a crash on State Highway near Tauranga.

The crash happen just before 8am this morning, 3km northeast of Pongakawa on SH2.

A SunLive reporter at the scene has heard one person has died in the one car crash and another person has been flown to Tauranga Hospital.

The road is currently closed and the Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.

Our reporter says the crash happen on a straight bit of road about 200m from the intersection of Old Coach Rd.

Police have diversions in place.

Update: 8.05am: Police have closed State Highway 2 where a serious crash has taken place.

The crash happen about 3km northeast of Pongakawa and about 4km northwest of Ohinepanea.

Diversions have been put in place on Ohinepanea Rd and Old Coach Rd.

A SunLive reporter near the scene says a rescue helicopter is currently at the scene.

Update 7.59am: Police are at the scene of a serious crash on State Highway 2.

Initial reports say the crash was on Te Puke East Rd (SH2) near Pukehina Beach Rd. However a SunLive reader who passed the crash says it is at the northern end of the Pikowai Straight, Otamarakau.

The caller says one car was involved in the crash and it appeared the two people were trapped in the vehicle at the time of the crash and they looked 'in a bad way”.

He says road conditions in the area are wet and he was advising motorist to take their time travelling.

Police say diversions are in place and people should expect delays. They have also asked motorist to delay travelling in the area and to take an alternate route if possible.

SunLive understands road diversions are on Old Coach Rd.

Earlier 7.46am: Reports are coming in of a serious crash on Te Puke East Rd near Pukehina Beach Rd.

Emergency services are heading to the scene now.
