Mason a contender in mayoral run

Tauranga's Max Mason is throwing his hat in the ring as competition heats up for the job of Tauranga's new mayor.

Max joins Kelvin Clout, John Robson, Graeme Purches and Murray Guy as contenders for role that Stuart Crosby will be vacating this year. Read more here.

Mayoral candidate Max Mason.

'My vision is to see Tauranga become an exceptional city over the next decade. We live in a place with phenomenal potential that is not being realised,” says Max.

'With the right leadership it can be.”

Max says his decision to run for mayor is driven by his belief "the challenges and opportunities of the future require a new and different type of leadership than that of the past”.

'What we need right now is visionary leadership, courage and confidence to achieve an exceptional city.”

He believes his experience, practical approach and strategic vision are what is required to meet the challenges as well as opportunities that lie ahead of Tauranga City.

'The pressures on our city finances are not going away, and we need to find fresh ideas to save money, be more efficient and get more bang for the ratepayer buck.

'Council needs to think and act differently than it has in the past. Regrettably I don't see much new thinking coming out of the current elected members, or for that matter the courage to make tough decisions. It's time for a change and after much thought I believe I can deliver the change we need.”

I know Max from his time leading the Chamber of Commerce. I remember a hell of a nice person who would always strive to do the right thing. You have my vote Max, just don't let the political nastiness swallow you up.

Once again... A lot of verbiage with nothing said! To ALL of the candidates for seat-warming positions at ratepayers expense. SET OUT YOUR WARES and tell us what you "hope" to achieve and how you are going to concentrate on the core responsibilities of a council BEFORE the "Baubles of office" and the "nice to have" projects. Being able to transport oneself around the harbour without getting stuck in traffic in well-known and long standing pinch-points would be a start!

That is what the voters vote for as usual, when they do of course they get what you expect, a mouth piece and nothing else of any use, has something changed in that????

but can the rhetoric be delivered on, I too share your vision and getting the town into a city mindset, if you could deliver on the almagamation of all the little council dynasties, and co ordinate decision making from one working group, cut staff numbers by 30%, the funds could be found for core infrastructure, it's way past time that management and staff in the council offices (where ever they may be), started justifying wage packets, the city needs to be run as a "business", so ratepayer/shareholders can see a balance sheet, not a exercise in paper shuffling, deliver on seeing this city grow in a way residents can have pride in, not a mishmash of ideas that only suit certain individuals and thier egos, good luck, and who would your choice of deputy be?.

Totally agree with your comments.Firstly the cut of staff. Remove that arrangement that TCC has only one employee the CEO and they are responsible for everythingelse.Half the time the elected members have no idea what goes on behind the scenes and have the wool pulled over their eyes, even before the ratepayers. Make them accountable to the elected members and then onto the public forum remember who pays the wages.
