Awakeri School won the regional finals at the Kids' Lit Quiz last night.

Ben White, Alex Robbie, Tayla Jones and Jake Webb were coached by Margo White and principle Peter Fitzgerald.

Awakeri School Kids Lit A team took the title of regional Kids Lit Quiz champions last night.

The quiz takes place ever year to test students aged 10 to 13 if they know their Harry Potter from their Horrid Henry. This year the event was hosted by Tauranga Intermediate School.

The team battled it out against Taupo Intermediate's team throughout all of the 10 rounds but couldn't be beaten – winning by 4.5 points. Mount Maunganui Intermediate A team finished in third place.

Awakeri School principal Peter Fitzgerald says Taupo gave them a run for their money.

'At half time we were only one point ahead of them. We gradually pulled ahead of them, by the time another hour and a half went by we had won. I'm very pleased and very relieved.

'The kids are absolutely rapt and now we're preparing for our trip to wellington next weekend which will be a lot more cut-throat and high pressured compared to the regionals.”

The Whakatane-based team was up against 26 other teams from the Bay of Plenty region and have reached the national finals which takes place in Wellington next Saturday, May 20.

If the team win at the nationals, they'll compete at the world finals which is held in Auckland this year.
