Civil defence test warning

At 10am, the Bay of Plenty Civil Defence Emergency Management Group will be testing the Civil Defence alerting system.

Text and email alerts will be sent and updates posted on Facebook, Twitter, and the Civil Defence website.

Text and email alerts will be sent will be sent out during the test this morning.

Fixed sirens in the Whakatane and Opotiki districts will also be tested.

There are no fixed sirens in Kawerau, Rotorua, Tauranga City or Western Bay of Plenty District so people in those areas will not hear sirens, says Emergency Management Bay of Plenty Director Clinton Naude.

Clinton says this is only a test, to make sure that the activation system is working correctly, so no action is necessary.

'The sirens are not an instruction to evacuate. In a real event, the sirens in the Eastern Bay are a signal for people to tune in to the radio for instructions and more information about a potential threat to the region.

'More FM, Newstalk ZB, National Radio or The Hits are the key stations for Rotorua, Tauranga, and Western Bay of Plenty. 1XX for the Eastern Bay.”

Who are the idiots that decided to use texts and e.mails to warn of an tsunami? Not everyone has a phone and a computer handy. What was wrong with those world war2 sirens?Noisy,so what. that's what you need. How often would they be used?Very seldom.

We are all doomed!!!

If it wasn,t such a serious issue to be advised of some natural diaster the foregoing is like a Monty Python,s script. You need to subscribe to get E-Mails and/or Texts ,there are no sirens in the vast majority of Bay of Plenty so we won,t hear anything anyway.According to Civil Def the siren is to advise listening to the radio ete.If we rely on that we havn't got a hope in Hades of surviving.Even if we had sirens it would take committee meeting to decide when to push the button to actiivate then of course some idiot would complain to noise control and they would have to be turned off due to being too loud. Have a good day!

logical to have to register to recieve alerts via txt/email etc. for those particularly on low lying areas, and the ones with 1/2 a brain cell probably have. The ones with the other half of the cell would probably advised us of this in the article....just sayin'..........
