Midwife flash mob The Mount

There's been a mob in Mount Maunganui! Okay, not that kind of mob… a flash mob.

Energetic midwives hailed The Mount today at noon to create a scene − all in aid of today marking International Day of the Midwife.

The day is arranged by the International Confederation of Midwives, whose aim is strengthening midwifery globally and which falls on May 5 each year.

The group assembled near Phoenix car park just before midday to prepare for their random burst of song and dance to the unsuspecting public on Maunganui Road.

The performance featured a mix of songs containing the word ‘baby' - from Ice, Ice Baby, to Justin Bieber.

Tauranga midwife Julie Dovaston feels thankful for the support herself and fellow midwives have received.

'We have midwives, mothers, friends, family and the lovely Zumba Sistas who have choreographed and taught us the dance.

'To the midwives that can't be here today, as they are busy being midwives, have a great day. You're doing an awesome job.”

'Every year, millions of women and newborns around the world are cared for by skilled midwives,” says International Confederation of Midwives chief executive, Frances Ganges.

'Every day, thousands of babies are born, mothers are taken care of and lives are saved – by midwives.

'Our key message is to promote that midwives care for women with skill and compassion.”
