Campervan fire victim dies

A man critically injured in a fire which killed a Bay of Plenty woman has died in hospital.

Donald Bishop, 72, from Opotiki, suffered burns to 50 per cent of his body when the campervan he was driving on Tauranga Road near Matamata went up in flames on Saturday, April 16.

The same fire killed his partner, 54-year-old Lydia Kiri.

Police have confirmed they are now investigating the crash as a double fatality.

Waikato Eastern area manager of investigations acting Detective Senior Sergeant Dean Anderson investigators are awaiting specialist results to help determine the cause of the fire.

A witness to the April fatal crash described the fire as being like a 'bonfire with about 20 litres of petrol on it”.

'We definitely did all we could but it wasn't enough at the end of the day,” says Mark Harris.

The poor man. We were on that road that day and were stopped just before the bend where they crashed. The smoke indicated a huge fire, thick and black.Maybe its for the best with such horrific burns and losing his partner. God bless.
