Flames were seen leaping from a Tokoroa home as a fire raged overnight.

Fire crews spent four hours battling the blaze after they were called to the Arthur Street house at 10.20pm.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips says the dwelling was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene.

'The caller reported a fire in the bedroom. When we arrived everyone was out of the house safely.”

A total of five fire crews worked from 10.30pm until 2am to extinguish the blaze and dampen down hot spots.

The Tokoroa Volunteer Fire Brigade put out a second alarm, requesting back up from fire crews from Putaruru, he said.

'Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus continued an external attack on the house, by then the majority of the fire was out.”

Jaron says the 80sqm home had substantial damage and no one was reported injured.

A fire investigator would look into the cause this morning.
