Coffey dives into water fight

Rotorua businessman and television personality Tamati Coffey has waded into the fight over bottled New Zealand water being sold overseas.

Over the weekend Tamati launched an online petition calling on the Government to pass urgent legislation to enable councils to fairly charge bottling plants for the water they extract.

The response thus far has been overwhelming for Tamati, who says in 24 hours more than 1000 people had signed the petition and the number is continuing to grow steadily.

'It is a huge issue that Kiwis really care about and the resoundingly message from people leaving comments is New Zealanders feel it's only fair these companies pay their fair share,” he says.

'Our country's falling deeper into debt but we're not taxing these companies who are profiting from bottling our native taonga and selling it overseas where water is the new gold.”

The petition also calls for the potential revenue generated by the legislation to be invested into cleaning up New Zealand's waterways.

'We should be able to swim in our lakes and rivers. If companies are taking our water out they should be charged appropriately, with some of the revenue directed back into cleaning up our waterways.”

Tamati was left dumbfounded to learn the Oravida water bottling plant near Kawerau extracted 146 million litres of water a year, but has only paid $526 in one-off compliance costs and $1503 in consents since 1992.

He says it's crazy that companies are only charged a 'measly $500” to extract freshwater, especially considering how much a bottle of water costs from the dairy.

'The profit these companies are making it's money for jam, it is a big cash cow that sees the rich get richer while New Zealanders are all the poorer for it.”

Along with the online petition, Tamati also created the hashtag #waterfightnz, which he describes as a brand people can rally behind no matter who they are or what their political affiliation is.

He's hoping the petition will garner 2500 signatures 'at the minimum” and if it gains enough traction he will deliver it to parliament.

'Together we can get these corporations to pay their fair share and use that capital to protect our natural resources for future generations. Who doesn't want that?”

SunLive has contacted Oravida for a response but the company declined to comment.

I see a good Coffey here. When you put together milk powder water and coffee.A good name for it would be Orivida .Well done Tamati our resources are going overseas for profit without probably paying any tax in New Zealand just a licence fee.

I rather think...

that Tamati is still on the 'political" list..look, water is a wonderful resource and we have the finest in the world, but...Tamati is also a believer and subscribes to global warming, which surely suggests there should be MORE water available...after all we are all going to drown soon aren't we? As for the "nature of his "claim", then maybe we can view this on a business level perhaps in.."are we interested in a Maori claim for water here..then say so"...or is it that as I understand it, Oravida is not a Maori owned company and not racially biased at all? just a thought....

Coffey is just a party puppet screaming into the void. He is a "businessman"..i.e. owns a bar in Rotorua which also sells it's services offshore...tourism is an export business... does he have to keep on paying and paying for the right to do so? His statements about the price of water at the dairy show a complete lack of understanding in business practice and costs. And then he plays the race card ...it makes me wonder why it is Oravida that is targeted among all the other water companies...is it because one of the directors is Jennifer Mary Shipley? Maybe he will sell his ...poisonous... alcohol drinks ( largely water) at cost. Does he pay a fee to "export" those water based drinks? That is a ridiculous question, no more ridiculous than his petition,or the media giving credibility to a far fetched "press statement" from a political nobody.

For all Kiwi's

We should be charging for all exported water but this should be by the government. All New Zealander's "Kiwi's" own this water and if the government received say Ten cents per litre the income to this country would mean an increased tax take that would get this country moving. This is one area that NZ could do very well. I believe Maori have legitimate Waitangi claims but water is not one of them. The income received will help us all including Maori.

While not always a Tamati follower he does make a valid point here. To use land you first must pay for it and the same should apply to water, including dairy farmers and others with huge water for their grass and crops. Only NZ companies should have access to NZ raw resources no exception and they should pay by the amount they use. .Nothing for nothing is the rule.

Absurd

This is an absurd campaign. A company that bottles 146 million litres of water will be paying LOTS of money to the government in the form of corporation tax on its profits, GST on buying the plastic bottles, and of course the employees will be paying tax on their earnings. If the company followed the correct consents procedure to extract and use water, then there really is nothing to complain about. Of course, what this is really about is the idea that Maori somehow own all NZ's resources, including water, and that by applying a special tax to such resources, iwi can take a cut, which they can't do with ordinary tax on corporate profits. Again, the nebulous and pernicious concept of "taonga" rears its head I note.

The thin edge

I will not support any charges for water while the current row over fresh water ownership and control thereof remains unresolved. Careful what you wish for people, if water is sold to ANYONE, it is a very short walk to charges for every one.
