Curry returns to sevens squad

Bay of Plenty sevens player Scott Curry will make his return to the New Zealand's Sevens squad this week for the Paris and London leg of the Sevens World Series.

Scott is one of two Bay players, including Teddy Stanaway, named in the 16-player squad training at Mount Maunganui ahead of the next two legs of the series, which also double as a trial squad for the Rio Olympics.

The 27-year-old makes a welcome return to the squad after a season ending shoulder injury. Curry will train with the squad, although not play as he recovers from the injury.

Not considered because of injury are Sam Dickson, Ben Lam and Joe Webber.

All 16 players will travel to Europe on Saturday as part of preparations for the Olympic Games in August.

In mid-June all 16 plyers will take part in trials for the New Zealand Olympic sevens team which will be named in early July.

All Blacks Sevens coach Sir Gordon Tietjens says Sam and Joe are still in the frame for selection depending on their progress with injuries. The door also remains open for others in the event of injuries to squad members.

'We're taking 16 to Europe so we can share the workload and give all players the opportunity to make the final team, so to that end we'll be using a different 12 for Paris and London.”

New Zealand has been drawn in Pool A in Paris alongside Singapore Sevens winners Kenya, Portugal and Russia. The team is currently third in the season standings behind South Africa and series leader, Fiji.

New Zealand 16-player squad:

Pita Ahki, Kurt Baker, Dylan Collier, Scott Curry, DJ Forbes, Akira Ioane, Rieko Ioane, Gillies Kaka, Liam Messam, Tim Mikkelson, Sione Molia, Lewis Ormond, Augustine Pulu, Teddy Stanaway, Regan Ware, Sonny Bill Williams.
