Restricted fire season ends

The 2015/2016 restricted fire season is no longer in place in the Western Bay of Plenty.

The restricted season came to an end at midnight on Saturday.

The restricted fire season in the Western Bay is now over.

More than 3000 permits were issued during the season, which runs from October 1 to April 30 each year, with many reissued for further burning.

Pumicelands Rural Fire District Moana Sector manager, Alan Pearce, wants to thank everyone for their cooperation during the season – by obtaining permits correctly, burning safely and reporting smoke sightings.

'We had a pretty good season, with very few problems. The season was also wetter and calmer than predicted, which assisted those burning during the period.”

Looking forward into late autumn and winter, Alan advices any rural land owners clearing land or doing other burning to carry it out with care.

'Remember, anyone lighting a fire in the open air is responsible, and liable, to keep their fire under control. This rule applies year round – an out of control fire can be expensive to put out.”
