Volunteers needed in Vietnam

Bay of Plenty residents are being encouraged to take part in this year's Global Village Build organized by Habitat for Humanity.

The organization which is dedicated to helping those who have been affected by disasters and who have inadequate housing, build and repair homes for people in need all around the world and New Zealand.

This year the build is focused on North Vietnam and Habitat for Humanity is hoping to gather a force of more than 300 people to build about 20-30 homes for Vietnamese families who have no suitable housing.

Called the ‘Big Build' it take place in Phu Tho North Vietnam, where many poor families live. While Habitat for Humanity does help New Zealand families in need, there is also a great demand in third world countries for housing.

Volunteers who participate in the build will be divided into teams and will work alongside the locals from the community as well and the build is scheduled to take six days.

Those who volunteer will be required to pay their own way but Habitat for Humanity will provide a number of travel options after the build with organized sightseeing within Vietnam for either five, seven or 12 nights. Volunteers are also free to explore the country themselves after the build.

Age is no limit for the build, last time this event took place, the oldest volunteer was an 82-year-old woman from Auckland.

Experience is not a barrier either, Habitat is not asking for skilled tradies to volunteer they are simply asking for volunteers. Many Habitat participants have no building experience at all but as each team is led by a qualified Habitat builder, lack of experience is no issue.

The build will take place between October 3 and 7.

The difference is that In NZ the welfare state nannies people from cradle to grave and you can do nothing all your life and just apply for benefits, housing allowances, and even extra money to buy clothes and appliances. In Vietnam there is no welfare state and those in poverty are genuine. Good on those who volunteer to help out other than in their own self-centred country.

You have a poor opinion of New Zealander's don't you! We actually have a class of people living in NZ whom are working, but are living in their cars, garages etc....Some pay their bills and have $3 for food each week...It is every NZ
