Hold, aim, fire!

It'll be fun, it'll be a thrill and it'll be something new.

That's why a dozen members of CanTeen, that special bunch of young people living with cancer, are taking up arms on Saturday, in a passive sporting sense that is.

They're going pistol shooting. They're being hosted by the Tauranga Pistol Club at its TECT All Terrain Park shooting ranges.

It's something totally different for us says Tauranga CanTeen's Charlie Whiteley.

'And it's something we promote because some of our guys don't know what news they will be getting next week. And you have to live life to the fullest.”

The group of 13 to 21 year olds who deal daily with the emotional, physical and practical needs of living with cancer will put that all aside for a couple of hours and go shooting.

They'll be packing .22 semi-automatics, revolvers and rifles for a couple of hours. 'And we will make it fun” says the Pistol Club's John Peacock. 'Especially the plastic milk bottles filled with water. Shoot them and they explode.”

'Pistol shooting is good for us” says CanTeen's Charlie Whiteley. 'We have some members who are undergoing treatment or have just finished treatment and probably wouldn't get involved in sport.

"But by its very nature, pistol shooting offers that opportunity."

Can somebody explain how the activity of standing still and practicing the operation of an implement which is designed for the purpose of maiming and killing human beings qualifies as a "sport"?

It's not hard to understand target based sports, just like similar shooting events in the Olympics, just like javelin or fencing, also based on previous weapons of war. No-one is aiming at, let alone killing shooting any furry creatures (or people). Some people just can't help being a misery guts for something to do eh.
