Exodus from provincial NZ

A rise in unemployment numbers in Greymouth typifies what is happening in the regions under this government, says New Zealand First today.

The number of unemployed in Greymouth has risen again moving from 596 last March to 642 while Westport shows a drop in unemployment because Westport people have left the region to find work.

'Endless job cuts and no regional growth plan is on the menu all around the country,” says Spokesperson for Labour and Industrial Relations Clayton Mitchell.

'Greymouth is not the only place experiencing this problem

”New Zealand First believes in adding value to export to create jobs in the regions and implementing New Zealand First's Royalty to the Regions policy which would return a minimum of 25 per cent of revenue created from any extractive industries back into the provinces.

'This is one of the largest problems this country is facing, says Mr Mitchell.

'There is a mass exodus of provincial New Zealanders heading for the cities for work and this will choke our country.”
