White Island activity settling

The activity observed at White Island over the last two days is now settling.

GNS Science, who have been monitoring the Bay of Plenty volcano since it erupted earlier this week, have now lowered the volcanic alert level to two.

'Based on new observations, the Volcanic Alert Level for White Island has been lowered to two from three. This indicates that the volcano is no longer erupting anymore but remains in a state of moderate to heightened unrest,” says a statement from the organisation.

'The Aviation Colour Code remains at Orange.”

There is currently no indication that activity may be building up at White Island.

GNS Science volcanologists are continuing to monitor the volcano 24/7 using existing instrumentation on island and occasional measurements made from safe distance.

'Further bulletins will be released as required.”
