Safety concerns over park gym

Additional safety features are being added to the Elder's gym in Kulim Park after a resident raised safety concerns with Tauranga City Council.

The gym was opened on April 19 and is now closed to allow for the additional work to be completed.

Children playing on the gym last week.

About $26,000 worth of equipment specially designed to keep older bodies trim and working has been installed by Tauranga City Council. A lot of the equipment is aimed at strengthening muscle skeletal resistance.

The gym was initiated by Seniors United to Promote Age-Friendly New Zealand (SUPA-NZ) organisation.

The one of many SUPA-NZ hopes to see pop up around the city.

Community fundraising was undertaken, as well as receiving support from TECT, Bay Trust, the Community Development Match Fund and City Care.

A Matua resident raised safety concerns and questioned by the gym was not at ground level, and why there was no handrail to the raised platform.

A ramp and some handrails are expected to be added to the gym this week.

The new additions to the gym are expected to be completed in 7-10 days.

Looking at the photo the very thing that was said at the opening that kids will take over the facility. Its great for them but is for the oldies. Obviously TCC did not really consult with the potential users and built the complex some 40cm above ground. Maybe this was intentional to give the oldies exercises to climb few steps as a bonus. It would appear that the reason for that was that the ground is "sacred" because sometime in history horses were using the area?. Of course they did not venture to the nearby concrete walkway which is on the same ground. There is no doubt that this facility is long overdue for a city that boasts to be Age Friendly. Come on Tauranga use your hard fought funds correctly. Talk to the prospective users first.

Yes they consulted, they told them what was happening after it happened. That is what TCC consultation means.

According to the previous story

The gym is the baby of the Seniors United to Promote Age-Friendly New Zealand organisation and they fund-raised for it so surely they must have consulted and had a say in the design?

Fund raised? I think you mean cap in hand to TCC ratepayers and they could not help themselves but throw heaps at it. Who is Senior Inc?
