Man injured in bank fall

A 57-year-old man suffered a serious back injury after falling down a bank earlier today.

The BayTrust Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to Whitianga Bay on the East Cape at 11.30am after the man fell down the bank.

'The fall resulted in a serious back injury and even though he managed to get back to the house nearby, his condition deteriorated,” says a rescue helicopter spokesperson.

'He was stabilised by a St John paramedic before being flown to Rotorua Hospital for further treatment.

'The helicopter was called due to the injury and distance to the required hospital.”

Meanwhile, the Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was dispatched Rangiwaea Island, which lies in the Tauranga Harbour, near Matakana Island this morning.

A 59-year-old local had become very unwell due to a medical condition.

She was flown to Tauranga Hospital for treatment.

The helicopter was used because of access difficulties to and from the island.

rescue chopper you guys fly in awful conditions at times and go to and see so much things that a lot of people dont see,being professional and humble as well,me take old hat off to you people,im humble as well,if i need you to pick me up on the ridge,me will send pigeon to you with note on leg to get me off me log,i may be a bit tipsy, but thats all good,anyway rain is setting in now up here on the ridge,me wahine is staying over,and Nightmare is over in the whare to keep dry,i notice a couple of deer in there wiyh her,so that is company for her tonite,any way Mumma and Teddy Bear thank you guys for all the great things you do with the chopper and look after people,all ways fly safe take care,love from mumma and teddy bear,signing off now,10-4 and hooray,Thankyou Sunlive,thebest.
