Coromandel roads closed by slips

A number of roads around the Coromandel are closed due to slips caused by the heavy rains which smashed the region on Sunday.

Thames-Coromandel District Council is advising motorists to stay put if they don't need to travel today due to lots of surface water on the roads across the whole peninsula.

Kennedy Bay Road is closed on the Coromandel side due to a drop out, but access from Kennedy Bay through Colville to Coromandel is open.

A slip has also closed Tapu-Coroglen Road on the Thames side of the summit, while both lanes of Whangapoua Hill between Coromandel Town and Te Rerenga is also blocked.

But council says both Port Charles and Waikawau Bay can still be accessed.

'We are also getting reports that south of Waitete Bay there are small slips that are passable.

'There is also a reasonable size slip in the south band lane about 3km north of Papa Aroha, but the roads are passable.”

Council adds that there is also surface water southbound from Thames and south bound from Hikuai, but State highway 25 is currently showing as being open all the way around.

This morning Waikato Regional Council staff will also be checking for flooding damage and liaising with landowners after heavy rain on the Coromandel overnight.

WRC Coromandel zone manager Tonia Clarkson says they'll be looking to see if the likes of flood protection infrastructure and stream channels are damaged or blocked.

'We'll also be checking with landowners in vulnerable areas to see if they have faced any problems.”

'This was a significant rain event overnight and we'll work closely with local people on any needed response.”

The regional council will liaise with the Thames-Coromandel council over any issues uncovered this morning.
